Transcripts from Home for December is a sound installation that reimagines the first 25 seconds of Tchaikovsky's December/Winter.
This work originates from numerous recordings of my stepsister's attempts to perfect her piano skills. The installation is set in a small, awkwardly shaped room with a half- open, half-closed door, inviting viewers to peek into a private space. The sound emanates from a piano bench placed at the end of the room, transforming the familiar object into an instrument. Inside the bench, a warm reading light shines into the corner of the room, turning the otherwise space into a stage-like setting. Next to the light, a toy piano lies neatly.
Accompanying the sounds, a highly reflective frame displays a transcript of my stepsister's personal interpretation of the piece, hanging at the entrance of the room. At times, the installation captures the little moments of failure and imperfection, evoking sympathy and a mutual understanding of the struggle and intimacy inherent in the learning process. At times, it creates a tiny stage for a piece my stepsister was never able to fully master.
